Witley Court in pictures

For many of us, the workplace is hardly an inspiring place to take photographs but for English Heritage’s Spencer Trickett, stepping out of the visitor centre door provides a view over one of Worcestershire’s historic gems – Witley Court and Gardens.

A keen amateur photographer, Spencer’s daily rounds of the site provide him with the opportunity to hone his skills when there are no visitors around. “Even having worked here for 14 years, I still marvel at the ever-changing Witley. Seasons come and go and showcase the palatial decay of this once grand home, whose character changes accordingly with the seasons. I often have to remind myself how fortunate I am to work at this site, which captures the imagination of so many visitors,” he says.

Other amateur photographers can share Spencer’s views on English Heritage’s photography walks at Witley Court. The next one is on February 24, led by architectural and landscape photographer, Nick Meers.

A recent participant was Michael Greenway, brought up close to Witley Court. He says: “I generally take photos at family gatherings and motor racing events, where you have little time to compose an image, so this photo walk was a chance to capture images when I could spend time composing the shot.”

“Having had a film camera for 25 years before I moved over to digital, I’d much rather capture an image ‘in the moment’ rather than have to retouch it afterwards, and this is exactly what we covered with Nick.”

Witley Court and Gardens is open every weekend throughout the winter from 10am to 4pm. For more details on the photography walks, visit
