Amazing August

1st September 2011 16:52:37

As summer turns to autumn it’s a chance to reflect on an amazing start to migration here at Lower Smite Farm. Two redstarts early in the month were harbingers of a really good early-season passage, the highlights of which were a lone tree pipit, 3 whinchats, 4 wheatears, 3 hobbies and another redstart. A supporting cast of chiffchaffs, willow warblers, a sedge warbler and multiple lesser whitethroats made for one of the best birding months the farm has seen in recent years.

With all of September and October still to come we’re keeping our fingers crossed for many more good birds in the not-too-distant future. Top of the wish-list is spotted flycatcher, a bird that’s less than annual on the farm and one that’s declined markedly across the county. Other hoped for farm scarcities include a selection of commoner waders; previous autumns have offered up greenshank, both grey and golden plover and green sandpiper.

It’s well worth making the effort to get out and about at this time of year and a trip to one of the high points in the county (the Malverns, Clent Hills, Bredon) or a major water body like our nature reserve at Upton Warren offers a great chance to catch up with birds as they make their way south for the winter. Be quick though. In two months time it’ll be all over for another year!

Steve
